Perhaps try exiting from pdf mode (C-C C-t C-p) and then generating previews ( C-c C-p C-d). I believe that this results in the previews (which are png images. Use M-x latex-mode (normally Option-x latex-mode in Aquamacs) to edit you a refreshed preview of the document after it has been compiled. You can continue editing your document as usual. For aquajacs, there is a “Reveal in Finder” function, or another one to open new files in one of many popular modes. I’m not an expert on preview-latex, but this works fine on my Aquamacs 2.

Editing LaTeX with Aquamacs
Aquamacs Emacs is a version of emacs that is much easier to use. Aquamacs offers a dedicated manual plus the good old Emacs manual directly via Prevoew Help environment – you can search both of them quickly with Spotlight and read the documentation comfortably.

For aquqmacs, you can easily distinguish LaTeX files on the screen by their beige background color, or use variable-width proportional fonts for text modes only, but stick to fixed width, monospaced fonts for editing code.
Check the docs for options applicable to your situation, though not loading it does not appear to prevent previews being generated. This feature truly makes editing complicated documents a breeze. On-the-fly spell checking is available as you type. Installation is also a breeze as the entire distribution comes in a single-click installer package.
