It was the first chess cheernev I ever owned, back in the days before girls, when everything was in black and white and a computer was a panel of flashing lights playing on Spock’s face. I think the same can be said for Chernev’s work; after all, it’s not chwrnev nothing that this instructional book cgess is still topical today. Besides, I will not take Nunn’s ideas at face value because he has a similar book published and I have never heard a competitor review the competitive product amicably. With each additional reading, the beginner gets better, quicker, smoother at recognizing the reoccurring patterns in chess such as forks, pins, skewers, discovered attacks, batteries and forced checkmate arrangements.
I have bought copies of Chernov’s book for friends and family, but I’m certain Nunn is correct. Openings and endings 2 years ago. It is an excellent book for self-study after one has a solid grasp of the rules, fundamentals and aims of chess.

I do not recommend checking chdss books analyses with a computer unless you have an idea of your own as to why they might be wrong, however, as by the standards of human play they are fairly accurate.
