I don’t know whether the original book is as bad, but translation is pretty horrible. Storr was a psychiatrist and psychotherapist, and writer of some excellent books. This thoughtful and engaging book provides answers and a host of interesting insights. Instead he found that his patients made him into an idealized lover, a father figure, or a saviour. If an unconnected private citizen espoused comparable beliefs—for example, that angels are birthed from armpits and that dead ants will rise again—he would be considered mad.

The cast of characters that we meet tsorr “Feet of Clay” are charlatans, magicians, and scoundrels, but they are part of the feef story and their influence throughout history cannot be denied.

Great and fasinating pen portraits of a series of gurus – both good and bad – including David Koresh, Rudolf Steiner, Sigmund Freud and Jesus. The sub-title “Saints, Sinners and Madmen” pretty much covers the symbolic spectrum though I’d also add Angels to the list before Saintsat least in terms clau male gurus.

And buried he rose again, which is certain because it is impossible. It was especially fun to read a psych perspective on mathematical discovery, which was compared to the revelation of gurus. This is closely linked to the intensity of their vision. Saints, Sinners, and Madmen: Want to Read saving…. This book explores these guys over the ages and is an interesting, albeit predictable, read.

He felt mystical experiences; a calm, love. The whole of his later work can be read as an attempt to discover a oc for the religious faith which he had lost. Sigmund Freud, Carl Jung, and Ignatius Loyola, who have had an outsized influence upon psychiatry and Roman Catholicism, are profiled as well.
