In this novel you legipn the darker side of the army and to some extent see how personnal feelings can affect the bigger picture. As with the earlier books, our heroes Centurions Macro and Cato are in Lgion fighting with the 2nd Legion trying to subdue the Celts. Possibly the best book of the series so far. No trivia or quizzes yet. Book 10 in Cato and Macro’s lives and it lz that we are not even half way through all that there needs to be said.

The Nubians as a race are introduced in the book and for an history buff it makes for great reading. Yet another gripping novel from Simon Scarrow, book 5 and still really enjoying tracking the 2nd legion’s invasion of Britain! No imagination is spent trying to conjure up an ancient Britain of any depth or interest.

Really enjoyed this book. It’s set in Egypt and csarrow again sets Macro and Cato up against their old foe Ajax.
But ju Definitely my favorite one in the series so far. The baddies too, particularly Maximius, are hilarious caricatures of mustache twirling pantomime villainy who seem to have little or no reason behind the ridiculous things they do. Simon as ever describes a brilliant battle scene.
The Roman army has come to Britain and is prepared to destroy the Celtic tribes to establish their firm hold. In this book, Macro got another dimension and so did several other characters. Enjoyable book and i will continue with the series. Withoutabox Submit to Film Festivals.
His planning is legiom and his ruthlessness contributes to driving more out of Cato and Macro. Plus, the story was – for me – slightly weaker.

The usual great quality as is to be expected of Scarrow, but there were parts that jarred with me. After reading Wikipedia on the Roman invasion of Briton, I realized the book is perfect mixture of historical facts and creative embellish Best book in the series yet, we are still in Briton but the challenges and situations faced by our two protagonists are very different.
When I first started reading this excellent series, lo those many years ago, I was hoping it would continue and as it went on I kept hoping for more. Once again the battle scenes are graphic as they should be when writing about such conflicts and you can easily see in your minds eye the horrific injuries sustained and hear the clash of sword against sword.
I didn’t — but I still enjoyed the novel, since Scarrow gives readers enough background that you can leap into this one without missing a beat. Books by Simon Scarrow. This is the second or third Scarrow novel I’ve read and I enjoyed this one the most.

I have to admit I was disappointed though at the end how it turned out.
A true achievement of the book, to have the back drop of these personal turmoil’s whilst not taking away the action and the pace and the drama.
